With the constant influx of new technologies and ingredients in the skincare world, women have an overwhelming number of products to choose from for facial cleansing. In truth, a book could be written on facial cleansing along. Instead, we wish to impart some best practices designed to help you cut through the conflicting advice and ever-changing product offerings.
Step 1: Cleansing
Depending on your skin type, you should wash your face at least once a day. Avoid using regular soap and water, as soap is not designed for your sensitive face; it will cause drying and irritation. Instead choose a cream cleanser that will provide your needed level of moisture. For those who wear a lot of make up or have very oily skin, a gel cleanser may be a better option. Use warm water to help lift dirt from your skin. Cold water will naturally restrict pores, and hot water will have a drying effect. For women who are short on time or traveling, there are options for disposable, pre-treated makeup remover towelettes. These can be a very convenient option, but be sure to be gentle and never scrub your face. Whenever possible, a cleanser and water is always a better option.
Step 2: Eye Makeup Remover
The eyes require extra care for many reasons. Harsh cleansers can damage the incredibly delicate skin that surrounds the eyes and can hurt as they seep through your eyelids. Additionally, scrubbing heavy eye makeup will pull and stretch the skin, leading to wrinkles and sagging. It’s important to find a gentle eye makeup remover designed to remove eyeliners and mascaras that are made to stay-put. Use a cotton ball and gentle motions as you remove your makeup. Never pull or scrub, and use upward motions whenever possible. If you’re a DIY type of woman, you can create your own eye makeup remover by simply dipping cotton pads in mineral oil until they are saturated. Squeeze out the excess moisture and they’re ready for use. Both the commercial and homemade pads will remove the eye makeup – especially the difficult-to-remove mascara. The added bonus is that they will help to moisturize the eye area. Pro-tip: Never use a tissue to remove either eye or face makeup. Tissues contain wood fiber and in some cases may irritate skin.
Step 3: Toner
A simple toner can work wonders for a woman’s skin. Especially for women with trouble spots, such as an oily T-Zone, toner can work miracles. Pour just a little toner on a cotton ball and gently swipe it across your skin, focusing on problem areas.
Step 4: Serum
Serum is like a healthy green juice for your face. With a serum on the market for every skincare concern a woman can have, using a serum before moisturizing is a great way to address specific skin problems, such as wrinkles, redness, dryness, dullness, and age spots. Serums can range from very expensive, high-end variations to less-expensive drugstore options. Finding the serum that is right for your skin may take a little bit of effort, but it becomes worth it in the end. Just one or two pumps of toner gently smoothed across your skin, and you’ll be on your way to radiant skin.
Step 5: Moisturizer
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Nearly all skincare experts would agree, moisturizing is the most important step of a woman’s skincare regimen. For younger women, moisturizing helps protect skin against damage that will haunt you years later. For older women, moisturizer helps to maintain skin’s elasticity. For nighttime use, choose a moisturizer that is heavier. Allow it to sink in as you sleep, so you awake to beautifully luminous skin. For the daytime, a lighter moisturizer is more appropriate, but it should include SPF if you aren’t applying additional sunscreen.
Step 6: Eye Cream
The area around the eyes has the thinnest skin of anywhere on the face. Therefore, it is always struggling to hold onto as much moisture as possible. Eye creams are designed specifically for this delicate region and provide a specially formulated moisture rich treatment.
By properly caring for your face, you will enjoy the benefits of healthier skin and find that you may require less makeup to begin with. We believe every woman should embrace her natural beauty and use makeup to emphasize her unique look. Starting with glowing skin is the key to finding your simple elegance.
